What happens on first visit?
When you visit for the first time I will take a full case history.  You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing and to perform a simple series of movements.  Through a series of specific palpations, I will determine the areas of the body that lack mobility and contribute to your problem.  If it’s the kind of problem that’s suitable for my treatment I will then proceed with treatment.

Will it hurt?
No. Treatment is generally gentle and painless, though you may experience a “nice stretch” or “nice pain”. Because I have a variety of techniques and approaches, if one is unpleasant, we can find another that is equally effective. Contrary to many people’s ideas, more does not necessarily mean better.

How long will treatment last?

-Each session

The duration of each treatment on average is about 40 minutes.  However, this can vary according to the nature of your condition.  The reason for this is that its important not to ‘over treat’ in certain circumstances, as much good work can be undone.  Some conditions may need more time, especially chronic ones.

Payment is for skill and knowledge, not time.

-Number of sessions

The number of a session will vary according to the complaint.  For acute pain, two or three sessions may be sufficient.  For chronic conditions (been around a long time) treatment may be longer.

It is a common error to believe that the absence of pain signifies the condition has been resolved.

Do I need a doctor referral?
You can refer yourself straight to me.  There is no need to see your doctor first unless you have some particular concern or need for reassurance.  If on taking the initial case history or at any other time I think a visit to the GP is necessary, or some other specialist I will advise.  However, people do often visit the GP at some point if they need help with pain killing medication.
